Standup Paddle Surfing!

The sport of Standup Paddleboarding SUP is exploding worldwide !

Truth be told, stand-up paddle surfing -- also known as beach boy surfing -- is not the newest thing under the sun or on the sea. The activity likely dates back to Hawaii's earliest ways of water travel. More recently, the beach boys of Waikiki, who worked tourist areas and taught water sports to visitors during the 1920s through the 1950s, were known for their friendly charm, aloha spirit and surfing with long paddles. Old timers say the beach boys used their outrigger canoe paddles to effortlessly glide their surfboards to the best location for photographing and assisting wobbly, sunburned tourists.

In recent years, surfing legends like Laird Hamilton and  Dave Kalama have picked up the paddle to cover vast distances, tame monster waves and simply enjoy a different (and sometimes better) view of the water. The sport is seeing a huge rise in popularity, and you don't have to be a master to appreciate its appeal. Perhaps one of the best things about stand-up surfing, especially for beginners, is that you can do it when there are few or no waves. (History by EDUARDO CONTRERAS / Union-Tribune)

Weight and durability are huge factors to consider when purchasing a standup paddleboard. At these sizes, a lightweight board makes the difference between riders carrying the board by themselves, or having to enlist an army of friends to help you carry your board to the beach. Due to the fact that you are standing up and riding ALL of the time, durability equates to longevity, plain and simple. Poorly constructed boards deteriorate FAST under the abuse of constant heel pressure and paddle wacks. Epoxy sandwich construction is the ONLY way to go with these boards.

Jimmy Lewis Standup Paddleboards Master shaper Jimmy Lewis has released three standup paddleboarding shapes to cover the full range of riders, conditions and performance targets. These standup paddleboards are produced with a styro/sandwich construction and epoxy resin to guarantee the lightest, most durable construction on the market.

WSP Sports is working with Real to bring you Jimmy Lewis Stand Up Paddlebaords... super light (important, they are 11+ feet) and strong, and the knowledge to help you pick out the right board! Below is info from Jimmy Lewis on the 11' board, that's the ticket for the majority of us.

The JL 11' Standup Paddleboard is the board we stock - Dimensions : 11' x 30” x 4 3/8”
The JL 11' Standup is Jimmy's dedicated standup paddleboard for excellent all around performance, both in flat water and waves. This board offers the most paddling stability in the JL range, due to its generous width and flatter bottom shape. Don't be fooled by its ease of access and use ! Advanced riders can crank turns and surf waves to bits on this board. The rounded nose and wide squash tail design produce a board shape that is very easy to paddle through the surf and very smooth and even pivoty in the turns when you need it to be.

Mistral, Naish and Starboard are all making SUP's in their respective windsurf factories. The benefit these manufacturers bring is the ability to add a windsurf sail to the board... super fun in light wind in the surf if your a sailor! We have tried out and have demo's in some of these models as well... and have links to the boards in the RESEARCH section at the right.
